Working.
It gives one hope to know such men are out there. Good on ya. Cheers.
Posted by Rumbear at September 14, 2009 6:40 AMGPS guided explosives, UAVs, robots, night vision, internet connected computers, fire and forget missles, and sharp pointy things on the ends of rifles.
Posted by toad at September 14, 2009 7:09 AMOnce again we have proof of my long held contention:
There are few problems of diplomacy that cannot be sorted by the swift and violent application of Jock, Bayonet and Bagpipe*.
Well done Lieutenant Adamson, by rights a long and illustrious military career would now lie ahead of you. Sadly, under this shower of mental pygmies, I suspect you'll soon be the subject of a politically inspired investigation for breaching Mustafa bin Perforated's Yooman Rights.
*Okay, the bagpipes were probably not present in this instance, but I'll bet the strains of the Adamson clan battle dirge were howling in the good Lieutenant's ears, all the same.
Posted by The Remittance Man at September 14, 2009 10:12 AMFair play to anyone who can slot a raghead with an SA80 bayonet. The rifle is really too short to be much use with the bayonet, but it seems it can be done. The SA80 isn't much use when it comes to butt stroking, again, too short and would fall apart on contact with the average Taliban's rather thick bonce.
Posted by John K at September 14, 2009 1:35 PMHoo Yah!
Perhaps there is still hope for the United Kingdom if it can still produce fine men like this.
Posted by pdwalker at September 14, 2009 3:36 PM5th battalion. What Regiment was that prior to the b@stards at the MOD amalgamating the Scottish infantry?
/Well done,Sir!
//and he appears to be such a mild-mannered chap in that photo!
If this young gent ever makes it to Chicago, dinner and drinks are on me.
2009 and the bayo still proves it worth, when wielded by a competent soldier.
Posted by Bob K at September 14, 2009 5:54 PMNothing like cold steel for dispatching the fuzzy-wuzzies. Bombs, missile etc. are all very well, but a bayonet...
Which reminds me, it's time to sharpen my old M4, while crooning "Soon, soon, my preciousssss..."
Posted by Kim du Toit at September 14, 2009 8:39 PMWell done sir!
Posted by Arthur Clements at September 15, 2009 7:46 PM@ Bomber: Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Posted by Brian at September 16, 2009 12:44 AMThat makes sense. Mad Mitch would have been proud of him, he knew how to stick it up 'em.
Posted by John K at September 16, 2009 4:49 PMThanks Brian! If memory serves, an NCO of the ASH distinguished himself in Aden by being the first Squaddie since Korea to dispatch an enemy with the bayonet when he put paid to a police mutineer in the Crater.
/ John K - Too bad there was no contemporary counterpart to Lt. Col. Mitch to help save the Regiment from amalgamation this time 'round.
Bomber: Thanks for the chance to research this. A soldier from the ASH indeed bayoneted an Arab during a nighttime foot patrol on 22 July (after the Crater had been retaken by 4 July) when the silly gentleman unwisely attempted to borrow said soldier's SLR. As shooting would have injured his fellow Jocks in the narrow confines of the back-alley, health and safety necessitated use of cold steel. Of course, this incident was used to smear the ASH and Lt Col Mitchell with false allegations of brutality. To satisfy the Arabs and Labour politicians, "Mad Mitch" was denied the DSO which his leadership of the extremely professional and restrained ASH deserved. Only one Arab was killed during Operation Stirling (the retaking of the Crater) despite the cowardly murders of 22 British troops by the South Arabian Army and Arab Armed Police who were never brought to account.
Brian - Thanks again. I had the pleasure to bump into some ASH jocks in Germany in the 70's. Slainte.
//too bad 1857 Raj rules were not put into play.
Let's roll.
