Posted by Larry Anderson at July 20, 2009 1:52 PMThe bearded men are combat engineers, I have forgotten the unit. They are the only unit in the Canadian Army allowed to grow beards, legend has it this permission came from Queen Victoria herself. Judging by their kit this pic was taken in Bosnia.
As for the Venezuelans, would you want that Commie Hugo Chavez to have real soldiers?
Posted by alinCornwall(Canada) at July 20, 2009 2:22 PMNope, the "lumberjack commandos" are not combat engineers, but Pioneers from I believe 2nd Bn The Royal Canadian Regiment in Bosnia in the mid 90's...they were at that time the only soldiers allowed beards.

A beard, along with an axe and leather apron are the traditional distinctions of a pioneer.
