Comments: A perfect day?

Looks like a perfect day. The only improvement I can think of is if your local's bar lord had arranged a suitably artistic evening cabaret from the Wiltshire branch of Miss Fifi's establishment.

You did forget to mention one other advantage nippers have over mag loaders: With suitable training they can be taught to mix and serve appropriate restorative libations once the shooting is done.

Lang haare can also be similarly trained but tend to moan if left to their own devices for too long.

In my book a nipper's a far better choice - anyone got a spare I might borrow next time I head off for the range?

Just getting my wife to read this so she can see what a proper day can be like.

A bit of a warning for you mate, pictures of friends or family holding your guns (or even appearing to shoot them) can result in prosecution due to unlawful possesion.
If it had been The Englishman's rifle in your hands then that's fine (his land and he is the occupier) t'other way around is unlawful possesion.

Posted by Lurch at August 28, 2007 3:17 PM

Sounds like the firearms section has WAY too much free time if they ever prosecuted for that, Lurch. Geez...

Posted by tom at August 28, 2007 4:55 PM

Ahhh, Halycon days.
I currently have an opportunity to acquire a mauser at a good price. Glad to know you are a happy customer so far.

Posted by MP at August 28, 2007 5:40 PM

Also glad to see that the EU has not found a way to prevent a publican from roasting a pig in the time- honoured fashion. I thought that a permit had to be acquired from Brussels, or perhaps Strausburg, to do such a thing in England's green and pleasant land. Imagine the carbon footprint!

Posted by MP at August 28, 2007 5:46 PM

Lurch - OK, so I am an FAC holder, but assume for a moment that I am not ....

Section 16 (1) Firearms Amendment Act 1998 allows a non certificate holder to borrow a rifle from the occupier of private land providing the following criteria are met;

• The borrower must be aged seventeen years or older.

• The lender must be the “occupier” of private land (not the foreshore) or “a servant of the occupier”.

• The rifle must be borrowed and only used on land occupied by the person lending the rifle.

• The rifle must be on the lenders firearm certificate (FAC)

• The rifle must always remain in the presence of the lender (i.e. within sight and earshot)

• The borrower must comply with the conditions on the lenders’ FAC e.g. the quarry species.

So I think that I am ok on that score

Posted by Mr Free Market at August 28, 2007 6:58 PM

So long as you're my servant them it seems to be OK, I must remember that...

Posted by The Englishman at August 28, 2007 7:15 PM

Does this mean that Mr FM is now in charge of fetching the pints at the pub for The Englishman?...In trade for occasional usage of a Mauser, of course.

Posted by tom at August 28, 2007 8:40 PM

Master, servant, servant, master -- it's all about rank with you Brits, isn't it?

And this recent trend of blogging here and at The Castle has to cease. It's bad enough that the Mrs. bursts out sobbing each time she sees a pic of England's Green and Pleasant, but when you bring out the Mausers and lever rifles, and show sons gainfully employed -- well, that's a bit much, don't you think?

[exit, wiping tear from cheek]

What brand of .38s are you shooting? Did you try other brands? The 1984 should cycle .38s reliably, I believe Marlin guarantee it. If it won't eat any brands then it needs taking to a gunsmith ;)

Posted by Simon Clark at August 28, 2007 10:16 PM

These were some cheapo ones , but it seems I'm not the only one - judging by the pages on the Marlin Jam - www.marauder.homestead.com/files/Marlin94Fix.html -

In fact it had been fettle a bit to try and improve the problem by rounding off the errant rough edge. It is probably going to be cheaper to us 357 than get it fully fixed :(

Posted by The Englishman at August 29, 2007 7:08 AM

Mr FM can be a borrower (of The Englishman's guns) but he cannot be a lender in this instance.

Oh, and yes the police can find plenty of time to harrass humble shooters doing no harm to anyone...
Catching thugs and proper criminals on the other hand? Far too busy for that.

Posted by Lurch at August 29, 2007 12:33 PM

Englishman,

Were the .38s those foul ones with aluminium casings? If so, there's your problem.

NEVER use any casings other than brass in your lever rifle.

Unless you like dealing with frequent jams, and almost-as-frequent bullet/case separations with a breech full of unfired powder.

Nice to see regardless of petty rules!

Is that Mauser a Norwegian army rifle, in caliber 30-06?

Posted by Steffe at January 27, 2009 10:41 PM

Yep - its a 1943 K98k which was surrendered at the end of WW2 & ultimately converted to 7.62x51

Posted by Mr Free Market at January 27, 2009 11:12 PM

OK, I also have a Mauser K98 from the Norwegian Army. But my rifle is in the original caliber 7.92x57. It was used by the Norwegian "Kystartielleriet" after the war. And "Kystartilleriet" did not rebarrel they'r k98's. But they marked them with "K.ART" on the left side of reciver. What is your rifle marked with? "HÆR" og maybe "FLY"?
Here is a video of me shooting my rifle:
