First car

OK, its Tuesday morning confession time - mine was one of these, but a lot lot older than the one in the picture below

A grey mini pickup - now that has just wasted half an hour of my life watching them on youtube and trying to justify buying another on ebay. Go anywhere cars, always had to park it with its arse up a hill to stop the petrol leaking out and the best ever for handbrake turns...

Had to wait for quite a while till I got my own first car. MG. Had it for a year. Cost a lot in repairs. Quite a solid car in other respects. Had a blow out in the fast lane of the M4 and couldn't tell until I noticed tyre debris in the rear view mirror. The car seemed quite happy to carry straight on. Having sorted all its problems I got company car and had to let it go in a hurry. The mid-80s hot hatch that replaced was much more fun.

Triumph Spitfire Mk4

1973 Triumph TR6, Mimosa Yellow. AND I still have it. It is on blocks in my Dad's garage in Ohio. Brought it to England when I was at Bentwaters in late 70's. Last ran in 1988, when we put it up when I was being transferred to Turkey for a year.

1969 Fiat 125: 1600cc engine, 4-speed gearbox, huge petrol tank (from memory, 22 Imperial gallons), a boot that would hold ten dead bodies (or, in my case, a Fender Bassman speaker cabinet) and acceleration like a rocket.

Of course, it was a Fiat: clutch failed, exhaust muffler fell off, brakes failed, starter motor failed, alternator packed up. All in the first 18 months.

BUT: I could out-corner a Mini Cooper S and once got it up to about 110mph. And that, at age 18, was all that counted.

A banana-slug green Opel hatchback. Painted a house interior for it.

Ran it for six months, until it broke a valve stem and died.

1966 MG 1100 Sport Sedan, 4 speed, sun roof, British Racing Green. That was 37 years ago and I still occasionally have dreams about it. It starts! It runs! I remember relating one of these dreams to my niece; no brakes, stuck in reverse, loss of control. She was a college student at the time and remarked that it indicated that I probably felt that my life was out of control. "No, no, no Jennifer, that's how the car ran!" I loved that little crap box.
I thought nothing of carrying a complete set of ignition parts, oil, coolant, brake fluid, universal joint, various brake parts. I once drove my dad to the local garage in it so he could pick up his car (1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass, 350 Rocket V8) he didn't say a word until he got out and shut the door "This car is a death trap".
I drove it to the top of Mt Washington and back down again in 1973 with my girlfriend and current wife.
With the suspension fully charged and Semperit radial snow tires, it was unstoppable. Jeez what a crap box. I loved that car.

1950 Ford two-door sedan. Flathead V-8, AM radio,reground cam, Lincoln carb, steel exhaust headers, glasspack mufflers, bald tires, worn shocks, dull, gun-metal gray (or grey, if you prefer). It had a chipped tooth on first that made it jump out of gear. Even girls who liked me wouldn't ride in it.

A brown Mk II Ford Cortina - 1500cc if I remember correctly. No idea what year it was but it was truly nasty...

First vehicle: 1983 Yahmaha Maxim 400.

First car: 1981 Subarau GL 4-door. My first, and hopefully last, venture into the cult of Subaru.

Ah yes, good point - my first set of wheels rather than first car was a 250cc Royal Enfield Crusader Super 5...

An inca yellow MG Midget, still got it in the garage. Needs a refit to bring it back into trim but who knows?

1959 Plymouth Savoy 2 door sedan. Flathead 6 engine, 3 on the tree transmission. This vehicle was two-toned with a white top and a body that, when new, was fire-engine red. by the time I got my hands on it, it had faded to rotten-tomato red. It weighed about the same as a Saladin armoured vehicle and had actual chrome bumpers and huge shark-like fins. It was so bad, that it was good, and I spent my formative years convincing young ladies to test the springs of its ginormous back seat!

1986 VW Polo Ranger.

Not a bad little scrabblewagon, actually! Like a miniature hearse.

Heh. There have been so many as my brothers repaired them. We did have a 1966 XKE for a couple of years...Corvair Corsair.

Then...*shudders elegantly* a Ford Pinto. A Toyota Corolla four speed.

1954 Chevy coupe, three on the column, fading yellow paint, and the power plant was the mighty "hot water" six.

1982 Mistubishi Galant Sigma. 2.0L rear wheel drive, I've only ever, in a list of about 16 cars in 7 years, owned 3 front wheel drive cars, and only 1 was less than 2 litres in engine size.

I have a definate preference for rear wheel drive cars with enough power to actually move themselves :D

The Jag was sold to finance higher education, but it was aptly named. It purred. Driving it was fun.

First motorbike 1970 BSA Starfire,250cc,24bhp at 8,5oorpm and nearly 90mph. Used to rattle all the windows in the terraced houses near us.
First car 1967 Rover 2000 auto in Arden green with a gorgeous sandlewood interior, very sedate.

A long Wheel Base 1954 Land~Rover.
Changed the following year (1992) for another LWB Land~Rover - a 1955 one which I still have and use. My only vehicle in fact.
Do I win a prize?

'58 Renault Dauphine.Didn't last long.
Turned it into a 2-seat mid engine roadster.
Pretty good trick for a high school kid I think.
