Come on, Clive needs not worry at all! From my experience, the mobile phone coverage in China is simply impressive. I've seen it work inside the Three Gorges, in the remote Caves of Thousand Buddhas at the Flaming Mountains in Xinjiang, atop the Tai Mountain in Shandong, in the Inner Mongolian desert, and so on. Indeed, recent Sichuan Earthquake damage reports would attest to, if ironically, the comprehensive nature of China's mobile service even in those remote & mountainous regions.
