Homenaje a Las Brigadade Internacionales
Whilst some get all misty eyed at the mention of the International Brigades…

but your humble correspondent tends to think Marxists, Leninists, Trotskyites … just about every shade of Communist you care to mention. Clearly the so-called British Battalion still has its supporters here in San Francisco

Shouldn't they all be about 107 years of age?

Is that Michael Foot holding the flag in the B&W pic? Wouldn't surprise me if it was.

It's instructive to note that while Hitler and Mussolini are mentioned as being in Franco's corner, there is total silence regarding the role Stalin and the Soviet Union played in supporting the Republicans. Some of the comments appended to the article are quite defensive about this relationship when challenged by other readers. How typical of San Francisco.

I met Denis Hills a few years back at a Spectator garden party. A charming chap, he had fought for Franco in the Civil War, not because he was a Fascist, but because he hated Communists. He did not suffer fools, and years later Idi Amin sentenced him to death for speaking the truth about the odious murdering bastard.Sunny Jim Callaghan had to go to Uganda and beg for his life, instead of having Amin rubbed out.
The rifles look to be Spanish Mausers, which were as good as rifles got in 1936.

Exactly! while Hitler and Mussolini are mentioned as being in Franco's corner, there is total silence regarding the role Stalin and the Soviet Union played in supporting the Republicans.
Hitler sent 6000 soldiers. Mussolini Sent 9000.
Stalin, 35(therty five thosand)regular soldiers!!!
Fortunatly, Franco win the war. If not, Spain would be another sovietic satelit and would anexed Portugal too!
