The globalisation of surrealism

Who remembers this advertisement?

Two Japanese ‘cowboys’ find a giant jellyfish in the desert & take it home to their apartment where it is suspended from the ceiling. Having revived it with a health slurp of homebrew, it pulses to life causing the cowboys to start some strange modern dance.

Last night saw your humble correspondent sitting in an Indian restaurant in London, hosting a dinner for some Chinese businessmen to talk about a deal in the United States. From time to time, as the boys merrily tucked in, I couldn’t help but marvel at, not only what a strange situation this was, but also how when I graduated & went up to London in the autumn of 1988, such a meeting would have been impossible. Today it passes with hardly a comment.

Wait a minute... so you're helping the Commies get a foothold in The Land of the Free?

Perfidious Albion, indeed.
