Monday Morning Mausers

Return home to on Friday night, underneath the pile of bills that sadly normally greets the conquerors return, was a letter from our local police firearms admin department – yep, in just under three weeks, they had turned round the variation to my Firearms Certificate complete with empty slots for a .17HMR, a .303 & a slot for the Mauser. Yippeeeeeeee! Now regulars might think that Project Mauser is now drawing to a close – sadly not – in fact the problems are only just starting.

As I mentioned the other week, with its ‘issue’ post & V sights, I can all but guarantee that I will never hit a damn thing. Maybe it’s the DTs brought on by decades of binge drinking, or possibly my mid forties failing eye sight but these days, I need a scope. Now simply bolting on some modern optics would be a quick exercise however dear readers, that would be way too simple as I would really like to achieve something like this …

... or maybe this

A steel tubed Pecar, Hensholdt or Schmidt from the 80's wouldn't look glaringly modern on the KAR and will work very nicely of course.

Unless you are set on recreating a Wehrmacht sniper replica I would steer clear of 'authentic' optics and mounts. The prices are inflated and technology has moved on a hell of a long way since then.

I reckon a phone call to Norman Clarke might be a good bet for your mount. Probably won't be particularly cheap, but their work is quality.

HSLD speaketh the troof. If you want the replica part, however, I'll happily get one and ship it over.

As for the scope: if you can wait until November... [hint, hint]

"if you can wait until November... [hint, hint]"

Is this when the much rumoured "Glorious Day" is?

Norman is very good, a match rifle mate of mine swears by him and I offcourse cant drive by without calling in, it would be rude not to stock up on expanding bullets for my.303 when I'm nearby!

Enough to give a hearty man a certain tingling feeling in the front of his pants - I like it.

Keep it original, that's my 2p's worth

If the Fritz had combined their Mauser action with the sights from a Mosin Nagant, I'd stab myself in the neck to get my hands on one... As it is, I share your dislike of the silly V shape thing.
