On This Day ... in 1918

Preparing for a counter-attack on the Western Front, British troops badly needed accurate intelligence on German dispositions. All reconnaissance attempts had failed, with several men killed in the process. Nevertheless, Private Jack Counter of The King's Regiment volunteered to make another attempt, despite the huge risk. Braving intense fire, he succeeded in returning with the information needed and the subsequent assault proved successful. Counter continued to distinguish himself, running important messages repeatedly through heavy artillery barrages, and was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Not to steal the thunder here, but 32 college students were just murdered at Virginia Tech.
Current thinking is that there were two gunmen, and the campus is a 'gun free zone.'
Not only that, over a year ago in 2006, the Virginia State Legislature overturned a bill
that would have allowed college students to carry concealed weapons on campus.

It was one gunman and the attacks were two hours apart.
