Commenter Uni Student (that just about says it all doesn’t it dear readers), felt moved to leave the following …
I'm perfectly aware that since this post was made so long ago it's buried under many other (and just as silly) posts, and will therefore not get much notice, but honestly... all this hippie-burning, animal-killing junk is the stuff of petty children. Global warming, gobal cooling, it doesn't matter, it's global CLIMATE CHANGE and it's most likely only going to affect you pig-headed idiots with no day jobs in that you won't be able to get your tea for a decent price anymore, because climates where the tea is grown will change to favor things other than tea. Until then leave the hippies alone, they're only trying to save lives, if not yours. And if this "all organisms adapt and eventually die off/ go extinct" hypothesis is correct, then we're long due as a species to die the hell off, and if so, you Mr. Free Market can be my guest as one of the first to go.
… while your humble correspondent was indisposed last week (more on that later). Usually I like to take the time to type at least half a page of whisky fuelled invective but frankly I just cant be bothered. Instead, if you will excuse me, I’ll pop out to the yard & just fire up the Landies

I suppose with two there is a sporting chance one will start in the morning..

as Lord Wogan said last week when discussing the fact that Air travel led to climate change - isn't that the point of flying abroad?

hows Gordon Browns plan to up the road user fees going to affect your landies? sounds like it'll soon cost more to fee the trucks than to fuel them.

Englishman - you are just suffering from 'truck envy'
Rhys - its just the cost of staying in the game. Unfair, unjust but just another cost that Nu-Labour have heaped upon us in a vainglorious attempt to fund their bloated & wasteful pulic spending programmes

You'd think even a Uni tosser would be clever enough to work out that it's now called climate change to offset those cold days in summer and warm days in winter that otherwise make 'global warming/cooling' look so stupid.
Probably doing Meejar Studies or some other non-degree.

Uni Student,
You really do need to do a little bit more research before you start spouting off about the odd Landy or two.
Have a look at this link (http://www.plantsforhunger.org/globalwarming.htm)and you might begin to understand something of the problem. Transport (and yes that is ALL transport) counts for a minute fraction of global emmisions, besides ruminant animals, let alone mentioning the NO2 emmited during the growing of rice and soya plants. And that is before we get onto the matter of whether water vapour should be considered in CLIMATE CHANGE statistics. In most cases it is not, because it distorts the figures of those that wish to control all CO2 output. Water Vapour accounts for 95% of ALL Climate Harming/Greenhouse emmisions, yet is left out of thew stats; why? Because almost all of it is from natural causes.
Oh yes, did I mention that we are getting closer to the sun in our current orbit cycle?
Grow up you child, if you and some others bothered to do some real research we could start to have an informed debate on this subject, rather than "oooooh lets all shout at cars"!!

If Uni Student would just off himself, he could earn an entire lifetime of Carbon Offset credits.
Save the Planet! Kill yourself!

mmm how does the student get to his red brick block? I suppose if one gets a lift with mummy you have no carbon footprint!

Thanks for allowing the soapdodger to make a dick of himself, I tried to find figures for private transport emissions as a percentage of total emissions, without paying either the EU or UN a heap of euros, no effin way, still I found out my car produces more kilos of CO2 than the weight of the fuel used, is bullshit a greenhouse gas?

Robert-- the term "climate change" was coined at the beginning of the 20th century, and "global warming" was a catchphrase used to better describe this change in the 1970s. Climate Change was used first, not second to account for inconsistencies of "global warming". The Earth's various climates are changing, it's undeniable; I don't argue that it may/may not be because of CO2 emissions, because I don't believe there's enough evidence to be completely sure. I don't believe it's good/bad, but you can't argue that things aren't changing just because you think hippies who key Hummers are stupid.
Gremlin-- I have done research on the subject (in fact see http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Study/Iris/ for a good long essay on the subject) and the absence of an informed debate was what I was griping about. Yes, it was childish, but surely "lets grill all the animals on the endangered species list to make the hippies angry... do you think they'd taste good with barbecue sauce?" can't be what you're talking about.
Mr. Free Market: I'm flattered you chose to showcase my frivolity.

"my car produces more kilos of CO2 than the weight of the fuel used": of course it bloody does. Compare the mass of the hydrogen removed from the carbon in the fuel to the mass of the oxygen added. Typical that the bloody student didn't make the point, though.

Uni-Wallah,
Firstly, thank you for the link.
Global Warming in the 70's? I thought that's when we were all going to die in the coming Ice Age?
Then it was Global Warming 'till the figures didn't add up and they got caught cooking the books (hockey sticks et al)
Then it was Climate Change because talking about Global Warming in the middle of a snowstorm made about as much sense as a hosepipe ban whilst it's pissing down.
Climate Change dates back to the early 20th? News to me, we never heard about anything like this till the 60's as far as I was aware, then it was how we were all going to die from pollution and DDT (Rachel Carson et al).
I dont think hippies who key Hummers are stupid, I think they're moronic thugs who need their faces beating in.

Oh yeah...I remember that book "Silent Spring."
Load of drivel. Then there was 'Zero Population.'
Another load of garden fertilizer. We were all supposed to be dead or mutated by 1990.
I guess in Uni Student's case that really happened. One lobe shy of a brain.
*yawn*
Must go gas up The Precious and Do My Bit to support America's war in Iraq or al qaiaiaiaiaiaida's funding or Hugo Chavez' need to impress Peace Mother Sheehan. Oh, and where I live, my SUV isn't required to have an emissions test.
