Sarkozy
It goes without saying that we really do try to ignore what is goes on in France, pretty much in the same way as France is unstinting in its efforts to ignore what is going on in a globalized marketplace. It is only when they try to impose their latest raft of eco-nonsense that we frankly we have cause to cast a skeptical eye across the Channel & then marvel at our luck at being physically separated from the rest of continental Europe – despite the unstinting & strenuous efforts that the Westminster village makes to sell us down the river to Brussels & Strasbourg. As the old adage goes …
The British refer to the rest of Europe pityingly as the continent. They go there to observe, to trade & occasionally fight the French.
When it comes to the Gallic mire that comprises French politics, we have even more reason to be suspicious given their propensity to produce big government socialists, Euro federalists & lets not forget, a rich seam of Nazi sympathizers. The prospect of the French presidential elections in May hold no real excitement, the candidate lists normally comprising faceless euro-rats & Monsieur Le Pen (one of the aforementioned Nazi sympathizers). Mind you its always worth hoping that Le Pen gets a few votes as it gets the Liberal Left rioting on the streets of Paris in pretty short order, which makes a pleasant change from the norm: weekly Muslim riots
Still last night the French UMP party, (often referred as being centre right in orientation … but that is in France remember, so they are a bunch of big government euro-centric socialists by any normal measure of political alignment) have elected Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy as their candidate for the forthcoming presidential polls.

Now Sarkozy’s credentials include tough on crime & illegal immigration

but in a very French manner i.e. when not at lunch or on lengthy state mandated holidays but will he really embrace free markets & all that it will entail? Whilst he has committed what is in French eyes, the final heresy – expressing admiration for Mrs T – I just wonder how much resolve he has when he pledges to reform France & to make the French work harder & longer.
Please dear readers, lets not kid ourselves here. The French do realize that they have reached a point where they can longer ignore globalization nor continue to live their means. However a general consensus among the general population that they need to go through this change is noticeably absent. They have a tendency to eschew the pain that they will need of go through to effect this change rather in the same manner that they disregard the use of deodorants.

Whether Sarkozy has the personal resolve to take on the real rulers of France (the unions & the burgeoning French civil service) remains in question. If he will receive a mandate from the electorate to effect this change is also in question. Running against him is the the (of course) popular Socialist candidate, Segolene Royal who like all socialists promises everything at everybody else’s expense. Her promises to feather-bed French workers have seduced many.
I wonder who is going to win?

He has Ahhhnuld Schwarzenegger, aka the Governator as a role model. As well as Clint Eastwood and Ronald Reagan. I got to live in CA when Reagan was governor. Ironically, California being known as the Left Coast loves to whine about Rethuglican Governors, but their economy does well, immigration isn't a problem and the welfare rolls don't swell.
Then you get the liberal Jesuit trainees like Edmund Brown Jr. and his papa. Or Gray Davis who was so unpopular that his own party booted him out and voted for Ahhnuld.
I hope you plan on covering this.
