I appreciate it's England, but what are the subdivisions? They don't look like counties, they look like EU regions, are they?

Is that because there is only you and your missus there? The map looks like it's coloured by population density. All the population centers are in red. Green actually means grass and fields.

Yes, the subdivisions are Europe's own "Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics" (NUTS - you couldn't make up an abbreviation like that) Level 1. They also appear under the name of Government Office Regions in an attempt to sound non-European

Personally I think that they just took http://www.naei.org.uk/mapping/mapping_2004.php and changed the colours a bit - No one will ever notice.
