Lord Mountjoy, newly appointed Lord Deputy in Ireland, marched on the Ulster rebel Hugh O'Neill who had dug in at the Moyry Pass. Mountjoy attacked for two days, but his men proved unable to break through the defences despite fierce fighting.
1857: In India, Lieutenant Daunt and Sergeant Dynon charged two mutineer artillery guns which had already inflicted very heavy casualties on the advancing British forces, and eliminated their crews. At the besieged Residency in Lucknow, Private McHale distinguished himself in an attack on a mutineer siege battery. All three men received the Victoria Cross.
1863: During the Third New Zealand War, Ensign Down and Drummer Stagpoole of the 57th Regiment braved intensive close-range fire from Maoris to rescue a wounded man lying in the open. Both received the Victoria Cross.
1901: The Royal Navy's first submarine, Holland 1, was launched at Barrow in Furness. Today, she is preserved at theRoyal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport.
1916: Zeppelin LZ72 was shot down over Potters Bar.
1940: The Luftwaffe sent repeated fighter sweeps over southern England. Night raiding continued, but at a lower level of activity than had recently been experienced.
1943: The 9th Australian Division liberated Finschhafen in New Guinea.
