Yep ... its happy gun dance time again
So, at long long last, I finally got my mits on her …. no no, not THAT barmaid, the .17HMR that I bought at the Gamefair. Duties duly discharged on Saturday morning, Disco Dave positively flew to my local dealer* (well not so much flew a chugged & rattled) & a few quid later (well a few quid as far as Mrs FM is concerned) I am now the proud owner of this particular Savage .17HMR, topped for with a Tasco 3-9x42 scope & a Reflex T8 moderator
& the other bits n pieces that go with any rifle purchase … Harris bipod … sling … neoprene cover for the moderator … couple of hundred rounds of CCI

All well & good? ... well not exactly ....
After the statutory 4 hours cleaning, fiddling, adjusting & admiring we were ready to go; ready for the thrill of shooting a new gat for the first time – would it feed, would it hell! No matter how much your humble correspondent tweaked, prised, hammered & swore, the magazine simply wouldn’t consistently raise the nose of the round high enough to feed smoothly …. Damnit! Seems as though either the mag or the mag spring is tonk. Pah! Who wants a 5 round mag anyway – better order something a lot more substantial.
As for the moderator

after feeding a few rounds by hand, it doesn’t seem a lot noisier that your average air rifle – although I hope to be able to test that a little more scientifically in a few weeks time.
Fully kitted, the once svelte Savage now tips the scales at a slightly more portly 10.8lbs – however this isn’t the end of the world as she will spend most of her working life(& I do mean working) being used on vermin control duties, over the back of a Landrover.
Sadly, notwithstanding magazine issues, zeroing will probably have to wait for a couple of weeks as next weekend I will be in my own private little hell – but more on that towards the end of the week!
P.S. & to those I you who notice these things & you know who you are: YES, I really have bought a wooden stocked rifle.
* I use the term dealer in its ‘street’ sense here, being a long term sufferer of CFPD**

Have you had a T8 before?
A few people have reported internal rust issues with them. I leave mine off the barrel when in the gun box because despite following the recommended cleaning regime I've had bits of rust fall down the barrel from it.
I've even heard of someone who had a hole come through the side, and someone who lost a round of .22lr down his. AFAIK it's still in there....

Is that a left hooker, have you been holding out on us, a southpaw with a timber penchant?

To quote Mrs. FM: it's about time you got a little wood.
Can't understand why the mag won't load the cartridges... Savage rifles are normally Mr. Reliable when it comes to feeding.
As for the suppressor, I'm green with envy. Remember that the .17 makes a LOUD crack! when fired, so it's not surprising that the T8 will not make it whisper-quiet.

I have the identical rifle, left hand, wood stock, bull barrel target crowned with two mags and it works and feeds well, except the bolt has to be back when firmly inserting the mag. We have varmints (gophers aka Richardson ground squirrels) which are significant pests on the Canadian prairies. We were in the UK in May and I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a surpressor.
