Gay marriage: its a question of etiquette

From Rachel Johnson writing in Wednesdays Daily Torygraph on the subject of gay marriage & ‘civil unions’ ….

Mary Killen, the agony aunt, tells me she received a problem from an elderly gentleman reader apropos this very subject, one that she could never answer.

"I wear a hat," he wrote, "which I always tip to a lady. There is a lesbian couple in my village, and I never know whether to tip my hat once or twice. Please help me, Mary."

Comments

1) Can either member of a lesbian couple be called a "lady"?

2) If not, don't bother tipping your hat at all. If so, then tip it twice - once for each "lady".

(Actually, I would think that a gentleman should tip his hat to a member of the female species, regardless of their sexual orientation.)

But what if he can't tell whether or not they are members of the female species?
