“EDINBURGH (Reuters) - The country's first tobacco trial has begun in Edinburgh in a case brought against Imperial Tobacco, maker of Embassy and Lambert & Butler cigarettes, on behalf of a smoker who died from lung cancer.
If the claim is successful, it could spark off a chain of litigation from smoking-related disease sufferers in Britain, similar to that in the United States. “
The case is being brought by one Mr. Alfred McTear who died of lung cancer at the age of 49.Asked why he began smoking, McTear blamed the advertisements which made smoking appear glamorous. McTear said he had not heard about the dangers of smoking. McTear had quit smoking in 1992 after being diagnosed with the disease but died in January 1993, three months after filing his claim against Imperial. His wife has continued the claim.
How long have there been health warnings on tobacco adverts and on all tobacco products? The actual issue isn’t if cigarettes kill you, because the do…fact. The real issue is that the late Mr McTear & his widow are not able/capable or wanting to take responsibility for their actions. Those of us who languish under Blairite oppression in the “Nanny State”, see this, with each day that passes.
Lets look at one simple concept here. People should have the basic right to do what they want to do, so long as they take responsibility for those actions. If something happens as a result of something you have done, you should stand up and take the consequences on the chin. This seems to me to be the perfect indicator of the decline of this country.
Now, I feel very sorry for the late Mr McTear, but I won’t be shedding a McTear for him.
